Kariton, a cart pulled by Carabao, is celebrated every March 28 during the annual celebration of the founding anniversary of Licab, Nueva Ecija.

It is not just an ordinary festival but it also plays a significant part of the History of Licab. Don Dalmacio Esguerra, the founder of the town, used kariton when he left San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte until he finally settled and found this town in Licab. As a tributeto this very important farm equipment, the LGU of Licab adopted “Kariton Festival” as the official festival of the town. The “kariton”,  a two-wheeled cart pulled by carabaos in farms here, took center stage as residents here celebrated the town’s 117th founding anniversary in honor of its founder, Don Dalmacio Esguerra, and its patron saint, San Isidro Labrador (St. Joseph the Worker), on Sunday and Monday.

Seventy carts paraded the streets for the Kariton Festival. Some were decked like floats while others pushed forward with hardly any decor to display their actual working features in the farms.  The festival dramatized life in this northwestern farming town.

Every farmer dreams of owning a carabao, but many of simply cannot afford the animal because of skyrocketing prices. A working animal, sells for P70,000 to P80,000. The kariton, however, is more affordable.  Read More:   newsinfo.inquirer.net
