FESTIVALS IN ILOILO

 

Iloilo is a province of festivals, widely known in the Philippines and internationally for the Dinagyang Festival. Ilonggos are fond of hosting festivals and fiestas. Haw-as Festival

The Haw-as Festival celebrates the abundant harvest from the sea for the town of Dumangas, Iloilo. The name comes from the term haw-as, which means fish. Some of the festival highlights include the Haw-as Guban, or a street dancing competition where participants dress up as the haw-as or fish. Pantat Festival

A gastronomic adventure in Iloilo wouldn’t be complete without the pantat or catfish barbecue from Zarraga. Being the “pantat capital” in the region, pantat is being sold in retail from well-known restaurants to alongside streets, cooked or alive along the town’s highway.

The Pantat Festival is Zarraga’s 3rd week of December annual event which celebrates and aims to promote pantat production in the municipality. Clad in fishermen and catfish costumes, dancers imitate the complex movements of this black fish to the rhythm of the beating drums. Pasidungog (Kay Senor San Miguel) Festival

The annual tradition of celebrating Pasidungog Kay Senor San Miguel Festival in San Miguel, Iloilo offers its people the opportunity to enhance camaraderie and fellowship where they give thanks and share their blessings. They celebrate the festival with arts and crafts, food, drinks, and special programs. The festival is for the patron saint that was said to have come through and save the locals from the area from absolute death when they fell under siege from the rival bandits. San Miguel is situated 16 kilometers from the city, but people come from all over for the celebration. Schools in the area let out for this event, and it is very special in this area.
