CARABAO CARROZA FESTIVAL

The festival is held every May 3rd, the eve of the patronal fiesta of Pavia. It is said to be the province’s oldest institutionalized festival. Hundreds of people gather up early in the morning to see the parade of intricately designed carabao carts made from indigenous materials, along with the trusty water buffalo and the maidens of the barrios, vying to be the town fiesta’s queen.

On late morning, the feast is highlighted with carabaos racing up towards the finish line. Farmers and their trustworthy carabaos gather in the High School grounds for the event. Spectators fill up this late morning spectacle, some betting on their best carabaos, others watch for the thrill. The carabaos, geared with their carts on their back, race together with their dear farmer to win the prize. The family-friendly community and agricultural town of Pavia celebrate the festival of the carabaos through the annual Carabao-Carroza, the longest existing festival in Iloilo Province.

Prior to the race, the festival also features a colourful parade of 18 decorated bamboo carrozas representing the 18 barangays of Pavia. Along with their 18 muses, the carrozas also bear the local produce of these barangays. The grand opening parade will take off at Ungka-I. Parade participants will compete for the top award, the Most Gaily Decorated Carabao and Carroza.

Carabao-Carroza Festival boasts Pavia’s rich cultural meaning and long history as it compose an important part of the Ilonggo culture. It also helps a great deal in preserving this indigenous celebration in Iloilo that despite the advent of modern machineries that are rapidly replacing our carabaos for agriculture making most of the farm work mechanized, the Carabao-Carroza festival continuous to rise for greater heights of progress for Pavia. Celebrated annually every 3rd of May and consistently since 1973, this Festival showcases Pavia’s ingenuity and of their being an indigenous people. Included in the Calendar of Activities of the Department of Tourism, Carabao Carroza Festival attracts many foreign and domestic tourists, guests, and visitors all over the region. The festival which highlight the celebration of the town fiesta is being participated by the eighteen (18) barangays of the municipality and consists of three (3) main attractions namely; the

  1. Carabao Carroza Parade
  2. Carabao Carroza Race
  3. Search for Carabao Carroza Queen.
