CORDILLERA ADMINISTRATIVE REGION

(CAR)

The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) is a region in the Philippines composed of the provinces of Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province, as well as Baguio City, the regional center. The Cordillera Administrative Region encompasses most of the areas within the Cordillera Central mountains of Luzon, the largest mountain range in the country. It is the country’s only land-locked region. The region is home to numerous indigenous tribes collectively called the Igorot.

ABRA – Abra is a landlocked province of the Philippines in the Cordillera Administrative Region in Luzon.

APAYAO – Apayao is a landlocked province of the Philippines in the Cordillera Administrative Region in Luzon. The Apayao River flows from the watershed to the heartlands traversing 6 Apayao municipalities. Tourists can take motorboats to navigate through its banks and see wildlife and fishes along the way. They will also see the various waterfalls of different sizes along the Apayao river.

BENGUET – The Mummies of Kabayan is another tourist attraction. These are placed in capsule-shaped coffins and buried in caves in high cliffs. Some of these are brought down to the Kabayan Museum for exhibition. Others are displayed in the office of the governor at the Benguet Provincial Capitol.

BAGUIO – Baguio City remains a prime tourist destination area in North Luzon because of its cool climate, fresh, green and peaceful environment unlike other tourist destinations in the Philippines. This makes it a favorite destination especially for those who would like to relax and stay away from the excessive heat of the lowlands and also a favorite venue of seminars and conferences.

IFUGAO – The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras and Banaue Rice Terraces are the main tourist attractions in the province of Ifugao. These 2000-year-old terraces were carved into the mountains, without the aid of machinery, to provide level steps where the natives can plant rice. In 1995, they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

KALINGA – Kalinga is a landlocked province in the northernmost section of the Cordillera Region. Sharp-crested interlinking mountain peaks, steep slopes, isolated flat lands, plateau’s and valley characterize the western side while the eastern section is generally rolling with gradually sloping foothills, interlocking wide track of flat lands and floodplains along its main rivers.

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE – Mountain Province is known for its Mummy caves which contain naturally mummified bodies which probably became so due to the humid atmosphere. The hanging Coffins are also found in the province, these are literally coffins hanging on to the branches of trees, many tourists claim there is no foul odor, the bodies were probably mummified by the atmosphere according to theory.
