With superb corals and the allure of the ever-elusive whale shark, Leyte has become one of the Philippines’ premier destinations. From graceful pelagics to macro oddities, Leyte is sure to delight.

Four major areas make up the extent of diving in Leyte. All of them are in the extreme southern tip of the island.

Limasawa Island sits just off the southern point of Leyte. This area is perfect for all levels of diving. Environments include deep canyons, steep walls and healthy reefs. The current can be strong, but the variety of fish and huge black corals make any effort worth your while.

Panaon Island and Sogod Bay are the main drawcard for the region. It’s here that whale sharks are spotted every November until May. When the whale sharks are not present, whales, dolphins and manta rays serve as entertainment. In addition, the Napantao Fish Sanctuary is home to barracuda, turtles, sweetlips and huge gorgonian corals. Read More: https://travel.padi.com/d/leyte/

Ormoc became really famous for cycling, thanks to the Terry Larrazabal Bike Festival. Besides that festival, Leyte offers great trails with spectacular views and friendly people. Specially the southern part, starting in Bato or Hilongos going south offers some of the nicest coastal rides in the whole country (check out the trail Magnificient Views, if you don’t believe it). If we talk about cycling in Leyte we definitely have to mention Biliran. An Island, North of Leyte connected to the main land via a bridge.  Read More:  https://globetrotter001e.wordpress.com/2012/11/28/cycling-in-leyte/

Surfing

With coastlines facing the Pacific Ocean, of course there are good surfing spots in Southern Leyte, Philippines! Though not known to many people outside the province, local surfers have already identified a lot of beaches with good waves and pipes in this place that suit beginners and experts alike, most them in the towns of Silago, Hinunangan and Hinundayan. For now, they remain an almost-exclusive domain to daring, young Leytenos, who love to do this watersport, but are also welcoming surfers from around the world.

Some of these spots are so remote that you can only reach them by foot, and what is even more astonishing is that local residents near them would not even have a clue of what you are going to do riding those waves! However, this soon will end as it is expected that these places will attract more visitors soon.  Read More:  https://triptheislands.com/off-the-beaten-path/making-the-most-of-surfing-in-southern-leyte/
