Ilig Festival

Photo from:  http://capizbestfestival.blogspot.com/2017/03/ilig-festival.html

“Ilig” which means “a downstream or seaward travel” or “a trip in the direction in which a river flows,” is a celebration which brings to mind the Dumalagnons’ age-old practice of transporting their chief product, bamboo, baled together into rafts, sometimes laden with marketable foodstuffs, to places down Panay River, particularly to Capiz, now Roxas City. It is a tribute to this very useful woody grass, be it in butong, kawayan, dalusan or bulo, a main source of living for the townsmen whose resilience and patience in meeting the difficulties and challenges in life is comparable to that of the pliant and enduring bamboo tree. The festival also assumes some religious significance: it reminds the Dumalagnons that his day on earth is temporary, that he should be on a constant journey – “ilig” –towards heaven – his God’s abode and also his real home – and that for such a venture he needs to load himself with strong faith and works of love and charity termed as taw-anay gugma. The highlights of the festival include Sadsad-Hapayhapay (street dancing), Tangkores (bayanihan), Kabutungan (bamboo trade fair), Biray-Lantay (fluvial parade at Panay River), Mapa-Suhot Kita! and other activities that will showcase the significance of bamboos. This celebration culminates on the 2nd Saturday after Easter, the Feast of Mary, Our Lady of Consolation, the secondary patroness of Dumalag. Read More: http://kasadyahansacapizkimm.blogspot.com/

Padagyaw Festival

Being held every year mirrors the spirit of unity and cooperation of its people. One of the few is the street dancing and pista ng bayan. These are the concrete example of group effort. From one fermented idea of planners, action men, and executions, they have translated their ideas and concepts into mass action of well rehearsed and well executed play, dancers, and graceful rendition of songs and dances. A delight to the eyes of the heart.

The town of Dao in Capiz is known for their Pasalamat Festival which is celebrated every September 20-22 of the year. The 3-day celebration is packed with religious, cultural and tourism promotional events showcasing the solidarity of the residents. The festival is also a manifestation of gratitude to their patron saint Sto. Tomas de Villanueva.

Patabang Festival

The splendid Patabang Festival gives identity to the festivities of the people of Tapaz.

Every September 20th to 30th, they joyfully celebrate this festival which is coined based on the people’s sense of heartfelt generosity and helping each other which is reflected in their day to day living.

Pagpatabang is a precious trait of Tapaznons and is best shown in occasional times of diligence and hardwork such as working in farms particularly during planting and harvesting season, bayanihan where a group of volunteers carry a house and transfer it from one place to another, assisting in the preparation of food during special occasions such as thanksgiving, weddings, and fiestas. This spirit of helping one another is celebrated through street dancing, concerts, and merry making and is common among the simple lives of Tapaznons.  Read More:  http://philippinestravelsite.com/september-festivals-in-the-philippines/

Sinadya sa Halaran

Photo from:  http://www.lakadpilipinas.com/2013/12/capiz-sinadya-sa-halaran-roxas-city.html

Our trip to Capiz coincided with the the Sinadya sa Halaran 2012 festival, which literally means “Joy in Sharing and Thanksgiving.” Held every December, this festival is a merging of the Roxas City Fiesta “Sinadya” and the Provincial celebration of “Halaran.” It is a commemoration of the feast of the patroness of Roxas City (the Immaculate Concepcion).

The main highlight of the fiesta was the street dancing, which depicted a wide range of Pinoy folk practices. Some of the dances showed bayanihan (the spirit of communal unity), the money dance (a ritual during weddings where people pin paper bills to the newly amrried couple to wish them well), and folk games like palosebo (where participants climb up a greasy pole). But dances weren’t limited to just that. We also witnessed a whole range of interesting performances, like dancing ducks, the life cycle of agricultural products, childbirth, death by drowning, crabs and gyrating ants, to name a few.  Read More:  http://www.traveling-up.com/colors-of-capiz/
