Benguet - Strawberries

La Trinidad Benguet is the Guinness World Record Holder of the “Largest Strawberry Cake,” a recognition awarded during the Strawberry Festival in March 2004.

During the festival locals and visitors alike can enjoy various activities, including Agro Trade fair, the search for Ms. Strawberry Festival 2009 and Mr. La Trinidad, jobs fair, strawberry contests, Strawberry Farm tour and berry picking, Dumba ni Kabajo, Benguet Grand Battle of the Country Western bands, and many more.

A civic and float parade in the morning of March 18 will be followed by the Strawberry Festival main program, which will be held at the municipal gym. The day’s program will also feature the 2009 Strawberry Cake Slices, a cultural presentation, and an “Uwik.” A fireworks display will light the night to cap the entire day’s activities.

THE STRAWBERRY FARM

One activity that is highly recommended  is strawberry picking at the Strawberry Farm in the nearby La Trinidad, Benguet.

A unique experience for the whole family, you get to pick fresh strawberries — right alongside the Ibaloi farmers — to bring home or consume while on vacation in the Summer Capital of the Philippines.

Located just 30 minutes from Baguio City, Strawberry Farm “opens it doors” for the activity from November to May every year.

The rates for strawberry picking vary. In general, it costs twice the market price to pick your own strawberries, which folks find strange, especially those who have tried apple or orange picking in orchards in other countries thinking they provide “free labor.”
The difference here is that strawberries are a very delicate fruit compared to apples and oranges and a lot are actually ruined or wasted when harvested by ‘amateurs.’ So half the cost is for the strawberries, and the other half is for the activity itself.

There’s no minimum amount per person, by the way, they just weigh how much you all have picked together and you’re charged for it.
All in all, strawberry picking “Baguio style” is an experience well worth it as it is the stuff that warm childhood memories are made of — priceless even! – gobaguio.com

Strawberry Farm in La Trinidad, Benguet lets visitors pick the strawberries themselves. Tourists can choose a farm for their strawberry-picking and pay for their harvest afterward. Price per kilo is slightly higher than if they were to buy the strawberries pre-packed by the vendors. Still, it’s a fun experience for kids and city folks not used to the farm life.

It may be hard to believe, but there are people who do not know what a strawberry plant looks like. That’s why many tourists do try to include La Trinidad’s Strawberry Farm in their itinerary. By picking the fruits themselves, farm visitors are sure to take home the freshest strawberry fruits. Visitors can opt to simply buy pre-packed strawberries from vendors lined along the farm’s roadside.

It is ideal to visit the strawberry farm during strawberry season, which normally runs from November to May, with peaks during the first few months of the year.

Strawberry Farm in La Trinidad is also a good place to buy unique Baguio products such as fresh strawberries, strawberry jam, honey, ube jam, peanut brittle as well as wood carvings, pretty knitted clothes and other souvenir items.

After our Strawberry Farm visit, we went straight to La Trinidad Market to buy fresh vegetables. Prices here are a bit lower than in Baguio City’s Public Market. We made the strawberry farm and La Trinidad market trips our last activities. We headed back to Manila right after buying vegetables from La Trinidad public market. That way, the fruits and vegetables stay fresh. – travelogphilippines.com
